Last Year, There Were Only 14,000 CS Majors

1 Feb

Yesterday, I was shocked to read on Chris Dixon’s blog that there were only 14,000 declared computer science majors last year. Compare that statistic with the fact that last year, 40,000 people got law degrees! This is just another reminder for how hott it is to know Computer Science today and in the foreseeable future.

Every business is becoming an online business – even mom & pop shops need an online presence. So the fact that there are so few people who can code means salaries and freedom / independence for computer programmers will be higher than ever. I’m really happy that universities like Stanford, Harvard, MIT, Carnegie Mellon, Berkley, and others are stepping in and letting people from all over the world with all kinds of backgrounds fill in this computer engineer shortage gap, also allowing them to follow their dreams.
